Thanks to SC for the link to the linguistic puzzlers up on the Linguist List as part of their annual Fund Drive. I happily clicked my way through to screen 9, but now I'm stumped. Better go to bed and try again in the morning.

ah yes -- upon actually going to the relevant website, I saw a slightly different term than the one I am used to; that worked... now i'm up to puzzle 17. how many are there? amazing!
it's not just you... I'm still bugged out on it as well. Grrrr.
I'm about ready to post some of the angles I've tried out and see if anyone (jbviau?) wants to say 'yes, that's on the right track' to one of them. But I don't want to spoil anyone's fun of being stumped and solving it all by themselves. So this comment will serve as a warning; sometime soon (tonight, maybe) there'll be explicit discussion of #17 here in this comments section -- don't look if you don't want external input! :)

:) OK, first question -- I assume it's right to asume each blank corresponds to the letter of the alphabet that would bear the respective number in the letter sequence? I.e. that it's useful to think the blanks correspond to the following letters?

aha! well, that explains why *I'm* not getting anywhere. I had all kinds of weird anagrammatic theories going on. But if it's a cryptogram, well then! back to the drawing board. Thanks thanks thanks!
