Try the Linguist List 'Lexicon' game...

Thanks to SC for the link to the linguistic puzzlers up on the Linguist List as part of their annual Fund Drive. I happily clicked my way through to screen 9, but now I'm stumped. Better go to bed and try again in the morning.

Be sure to read the headline of the page "You did what? And where?" for a hint.

ah yes -- upon actually going to the relevant website, I saw a slightly different term than the one I am used to; that worked... now i'm up to puzzle 17. how many are there? amazing!

I'm still stuck in puzzle #9... I'm sure I'm missing the obvious :S

#17 is killing me. I can't make heads nor tails; and I'm a professional. By which I mean I'm one of the few people who has received money to do linguistics and received money to solve puzzles. Darnit, Heidi, I was supposed to get grading done today; can't you post these interesting things at times when I have nothing to do? (If so, give me a heads-up; I'd love to know when those times would be.)

I made some progress on #17 but haven't solved it quite yet--received the cryptic hint "Right, but scrambled." Ack!

OK, got it. Now I can get back to work!

it's not just you... I'm still bugged out on it as well. Grrrr.

I'm about ready to post some of the angles I've tried out and see if anyone (jbviau?) wants to say 'yes, that's on the right track' to one of them. But I don't want to spoil anyone's fun of being stumped and solving it all by themselves. So this comment will serve as a warning; sometime soon (tonight, maybe) there'll be explicit discussion of #17 here in this comments section -- don't look if you don't want external input! :)

You can also ask Linguist List for a clue if you've already donated. I did that and found it a little helpful. Just a little.

Thanks josh!
:) OK, first question -- I assume it's right to asume each blank corresponds to the letter of the alphabet that would bear the respective number in the letter sequence? I.e. that it's useful to think the blanks correspond to the following letters?

whaeaoe ogvhafre

just a yes or no will be good. :)

No, unfortunately. The associations between number and letter are arbitrary. It's a cryptogram.

aha! well, that explains why *I'm* not getting anywhere. I had all kinds of weird anagrammatic theories going on. But if it's a cryptogram, well then! back to the drawing board. Thanks thanks thanks!
